Rotterdam is a vibrant city, often dubbed the “gateway to Europe”, due to its strategically located cargo port. With a population of nearly 650,000, the town is the second largest in the Netherlands and has grown over the years to become a major economic and logistic centre, providing a base for hundreds of large international companies such as Unilever, Allianz and Pfizer.
Rotterdam is an interesting city architecturally, as it has been more or less completely rebuilt after being virtually destroyed by bombs during the second world war. The city is roughly divided in north and south by the Nieuwe Maas river, and in recent years the commercial centre, which was located on the north side of the river, has been extended southwards to “de Kop of Zuid”, where many major companies have their headquarters.
It has excellent transport links (26 minutes by train to Schiphol airport) and good public transport options throughout the city. Fast trains connect you swiftly with London, Paris and Frankfurt.
Rotterdam is also a centre of culture offering art, music, dance, theatre and cuisines from all corners of the globe. Many festivals, including the International Film Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival, are held here, as well as many world famous sport events. Theatres, museums, and a wide variety of shops add to the cosmopolitan feel of the city.
Rotterdam’s surroundings are varied and often surprisingly rural and green. Good transport links mean that commuting is a viable option and many people choose to live outside the city centre in one of the many pleasant suburbs or villages. There are several International Schools in and around Rotterdam, as well as excellent university options including the Erasmus University and the Rotterdam University.
